Bring your boots, your rod, or your saddle; this county has ground for all three. Twenty-six thousand acres of public land lie inside the county line: flooded coal pits gone clear at the end of gravel roads, reclaimed mine ground grown back into forest and grassland, and a river for a western border. Fish it, hike it, ride it, paddle it, or play eighteen holes of disc golf along the lake out at the county park. Then pick a different way and come back.

SUMMER HAS ARRIVED
The best of Shakamak State Park this season
Shakamak State Park earns a full summer day. The family aquatic center is open with a pool, a slide, and a diving board; three quiet lakes hold bass and bluegill for a slow troll or an easy paddle; and five trails loop through the oak woods when the afternoon calls for shade. Camp over and do it all again tomorrow.
GET OUTSIDE
Eleven ways to spend a day
Walk the bluff at Merom and look down on the Wabash, follow trails through reclaimed mine land now turned to forest and lakes, or find a quiet spot and watch the sun set over the water. However you like to be outside, one of the eleven cards below gets you there.
