What we collect
Information you send us. The contact form asks for your name, email address, phone number, and message. The newsletter sign-up asks for your name and email address. If you create an account to share a story on our blog, we collect the username and email address you register with, along with the story text and photographs you submit.
Information collected automatically. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, which record the IP address, browser type, and pages requested on each visit. We use them to run the site and watch for abuse. The site does not run advertising or analytics trackers.
How we use your information
We use what you send us to answer your message, send the monthly newsletter, and review the stories and photographs visitors submit. Submitted stories are reviewed before anything is published; by submitting, you give us permission to publish your story and photographs on this site. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we share it only with the service providers that host and operate the site, or when the law requires it.
Cookies
The site sets functional cookies only. If you create an account and log in, WordPress sets cookies that hold your sign-in and remember your screen preferences. There are no advertising or analytics cookies.
Third-party services
Google supplies the maps and fonts on this site; when a page loads them, your browser connects to Google’s servers, which receive your IP address. Google’s own privacy policy applies to that connection. Account profile images load from Gravatar, an Automattic service with its own policy. Where the site links to Facebook or Instagram, those platforms’ policies apply once you leave.
How long we keep it
Messages and newsletter sign-ups stay only as long as they serve the purpose you sent them for. Published stories stay on the site until you ask us to take them down or we retire them.
Your choices
Email or call us to see, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you, or to come off the newsletter list. Account holders can also request an exported file of their data or ask that the account be erased.
Children
This site is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version is posted on this page with a new date.
