A crowd travels well in Sullivan County. The downtown square makes an easy afternoon on foot, and the eight towns are within a short drive of one another. Half the group can browse the antique shops while the other half fishes a stocked lake, and everybody is back together for supper. Bring the reunion, the club, the congregation, or the motorcoach tour. There’s room to spread out, parking you won’t fight for, and a county that remembers you came.

Sullivan County handles working gatherings too: a meeting, a conference, a class reunion, or a banquet. The civic center sits a couple blocks north of the downtown square, with room for four hundred. The golf clubhouse on the west side of Sullivan hosts outings and gatherings, with a restaurant and bar on site. The retreat campus at Merom gives a church or corporate group the whole grounds for a weekend.

The retreat center at Merom sleeps whole groups: cabins and group lodging on the old college grounds, booked by congregations, youth camps, and family reunions. The grounds book as a whole rather than a room at a time, so call well ahead of the date.
Camping carries the rest. Greene-Sullivan State Forest has primitive campgrounds at Narrow Lake, Wampler Lake, and Reservoir #26, about a hundred family sites between them, plus rent-a-camp cabins and a horse camp near Ladder Lake. Shakamak State Park adds modern and primitive campsites and family cabins across 1,766 acres and three lakes.
Sullivan County Park & Lake takes tents and RVs and rents deluxe cabins with a full bath, March through October. Six more sites sit at the top of the bluff at Merom Bluff Park, two hundred feet above the Wabash, booked through the Town of Merom.
For a room with a door key, the Days Inn is on State Road 154 west of Sullivan. The Inn at Fairbanks Landing, up at the Fairbanks Community Center, has indoor rooms with a shared kitchen, laundry, and dining room, and it books by the season as well as by the night.
Twenty-five days are already mapped, from a sunrise on the lake to a sunset on the bluff. Start with one and build the group’s weekend around it.
If the group is flying, Evansville Regional is about eighty miles south and Indianapolis International about ninety miles northeast. Terre Haute Regional, roughly half an hour north, handles charter and general aviation, and the county’s own general-aviation field is just northwest of town.
