Well, look who found us. Welcome to Sullivan County, Indiana: eight towns, 26,000 public acres of lakes and woods, and the Wabash River on our western edge. This is the first post on our new blog, and since friends don’t stand on ceremony, come on in and let us show you around.
Start with the water and the woods, because everybody does. Sullivan County Park & Lake wraps a 461-acre stocked lake in campgrounds, sand, and shade. Greene-Sullivan State Forest spreads 9,000 wooded acres around strip-pit lakes that fish like nobody’s business. Redbird State Recreational Area turns old coal ground into off-road trail country, and Merom Bluff Park puts you two hundred feet above the Wabash, where the sunset draws a crowd for the sky show almost every day.
Then give the towns their turn. Sullivan will fill a morning with unique shops and the Sullivan County History Museum on the square, plus the antique mall up North Section Street. Drive out to Dugger and the Dugger Coal Museum shows you the photographs and mine ledgers this county was dug from. When you get hungry, the food spread here is real: home-style plates, Mexican, Italian, pizza, BBQ, and menus that hold their own against any city’s.
Time it right and you will hit a festival. The Corn Festival takes the Sullivan square for four days every September, Dugger throws its Coal Festival in the fall, and the newsletter keeps you posted between trips.
