The American Revolution’s westernmost naval battle was fought on Sullivan County’s stretch of the Wabash. On March 2, 1779, Captain Leonard Helm led three boats and fifty volunteers up from Vincennes and captured a British reinforcement fleet at Pointe Coupee: seven boats, forty soldiers, and the supplies and Indian trade goods aboard. The capture ended British military power on the Wabash. The Sullivan County Historical Society placed the marker in 1985, off US 41 just south of the SR 58 junction near Carlisle.
