The Sullivan County Courthouse stands at the center of the downtown square, the limestone anchor the rest of Sullivan was built around. Architects John Bayard and Walter Heath designed it in the Beaux-Arts style, the building went up between 1926 and 1928, and the three limestone stories have held the county’s offices and courts for nearly a century and hold them still.
It is on the National Register of Historic Places, and the storefronts facing it form the Sullivan Courthouse Square Historic District, the early-twentieth-century commercial core that grew up around it.
As a working courthouse it keeps regular county business hours; the square outside is open any time to take in the building and the blocks around it.
