If you’re flying yourself into Sullivan County, you land at Sullivan County Airport, three miles northwest of town in open farmland. It’s a general-aviation field, no airline counters, but it’s set up to make a small plane welcome: a 4,300-foot lighted asphalt runway, unobstructed visual approaches, three instrument approaches, and a full-time manager on site.
Self-service fuel, both 100LL and Jet-A, is available around the clock. The terminal has 24-hour restrooms and internet for pilots and passengers, and there’s a courtesy car you can borrow during business hours to run into town for a meal or shopping. The field also rents aircraft, gives flight instruction and airplane rides, and has hangars for overnight and monthly rental.
The airport has been part of the county since Senator Vance Hartke dedicated it in October 1966. It still draws a crowd for events like its bi-monthly Saturday breakfast. It’s a comfortable stop, for a day in the county or just to stretch and refuel on the way through.
If you’re flying commercial, the nearest passenger airports are Evansville Regional, about eighty miles south, and Indianapolis International, about ninety miles northeast; Terre Haute Regional, roughly half an hour north, is the closest field for charter and general aviation.
