Merom got here first. Founded on the bluff in 1817, it kept the county’s first courthouse, a log building, and with it the county seat from 1819 to 1842. The town was an important river port and a stage stop on the Old Sullivan Trail, and troops bound for Tippecanoe camped nearby in 1811. The marker is on Third Street, which is SR 63 inside town.
