For ten days each summer between 1905 and 1936, the bluff at Merom filled with concerts, debates, plays, and lectures, a religious and educational gathering organized in the national Chautauqua movement to bring culture to rural communities. Carrie Nation, William Jennings Bryan, William H. Taft, Warren Harding, and Billy Sunday all spoke here. The marker is in Merom Bluff Park near the pavilion, and the river view behind it is the one the crowds came for.
