Every road sign that says Fairbanks remembers a soldier. In September 1812, Sergeant Nathan Fairbanks and about a dozen men were escorting supplies from Fort Knox near Vincennes to Fort Sullivan at Terre Haute when Indians ambushed the detail three miles west-southwest of here, and most of the party was killed. The settlement took the sergeant’s name, and the marker at Main and Market Streets, by the post office, keeps the account.
