Dugger was a coal town, and the Dugger Coal Museum keeps that history on East Main Street. Founded in 1980, it holds photographs and artifacts from the mines that built the town, including a union local’s financial secretary’s cash book from 1954 to 1967 and mine inspectors’ notebooks from the same years.
The mining that gave the town its name pulled two million tons of coal out of the ground before the operation closed. The museum gathers what’s left of that working memory in one place.
The museum opens during the Dugger Coal Festival each fall, with the parade, dinners, and cruise-in rallies going on outside, and it opens by appointment the rest of the year. Call ahead before you make the drive.
