The Civil War divided Sullivan County neighbors against each other, and near this spot it drew blood. At a community picnic on July 14, 1864, John Drake, an anti-war Democrat, was fatally shot by a Union soldier, and the soldier apparently never answered for it. The 1992 marker on Main Street at the north edge of Fairbanks sets the story down plainly.
